Kennel experience

Hi all

Gixer was in the kennels for 6 days as we went away and couldn't take him with us. It's a kennel we've used before, has been around for ever and has lots of good reccommendations however this time I'm not too happy. My friend works there part time and told me 2 days before we were going away she'd feel happier if we didn't take him there because the owner of the kennels is ill, not living there at the moment so it isn't manned 24/7 and with Gixer's condition she wouldn't forgive herself not telling us. Due to the short notice we had to let him go. I went with my usual essay of vet numbers, emergency contacts, exercise and medication instructions and went through it all before leaving.

When we collected him on Thursday the manager told us she had a hard time giving him his tablets mainly in the evening - even the one that he chews he apparently was refusing and she had to put it down his throat. I know from last time that she wasn't very confident at giving them to him and the main problem is he has to have them 1 hour before food and has to be given them orally. I asked how he'd been at exercise and she said fine he hadn't done his lying down thing at all - I find that hard to believe because after only about 5 mins running he is tired so I don't think he's had much exercise either.

He didn't eat much which is not unusual for him but seemed to have less then usual. Since being home he has done nothing but sleep and hasn't been very bright and bouncy at all so I don't think he has had his tablets correctly. I am going to ask my friend to find out if he did have them.

I'm quite disappointed because they have always been a good kennels and it seems like things are changing. I am going to check out another one which is further away but the staff are canine first aiders and they have no issues around meds. I think we have to put loyalty aside now and think about how Gix's condition is going to affect him in the future. This other kennel give the dogs 2 walks a day also and they have already told me he could have 2 shorter walks or one walk and then be allowed to exercise in the fenced area. Seems like they are much more switched on to dogs with medical problems.

Re: Kennel experience

The new kennel sounds good, you need to have complete faith in them, especially when you know your baby has health problems, otherwise you'd never relax while you were away. Hope Gix is soon back to his happy self

Oo poor Gixer!!! I know how you feel, and you have to have complete faith in the kennels when you are leaving them. Hope the new kennels works out for you better and you feel confident in leaving Gixer there when you have to.

Liz
