Hi everyone
Gixer had his checkup with his cardiologist last week and all seems OK. He said Gix is looking really good and doing really well especially as he thought he was going to "crash and burn" on us at one time!! I told him Gix has been put on Frusimide now as he had a downward turn in February and it seemed to perk him up. the cardiologist said although Frusimide is a very good diuretic in the long term if you are on too high a dose it can cause problems with the heart so we need to get Gix on the lowest dose possible. So what I have to do now is measure how many breaths he takes in 1 minute daily for a month - if it stays the same then we will probably start reducing the tablet and carrying on until he is on the lowest possible dose. If his breaths steadily increase it means he is getting congested so it's also a good way of monitoring his heart disease. Have any of you had to do this before? It's just that the vet said normally dogs breathe between 28-36 times a minute and when I did Gixer today I only counted 14!! I was only counting chest rises so don't know if this is right. I read online that if they have heart problems and are working harder to breathe it could be under 20. Does anyone know if I opnly count inhaling or do I have to count exhaling also? I will ring the vet but didn't want to sound stupid (obviously ot's OK to sound stupid on here!!!!)

I guess I'm not too smart either, but I think it would be how many actual breaths he takes IN,in one minute. That does sound kinda low,but I've never counted Brody's breaths,either.Hmmmm....may have to try that, just to know.
What did your vet say?Hope Gixer is still doing well. |

I'm waiting for the vet to call back. Apparently an in and out counts as 1 breath. Will let you know.
