Does anyone know much about ACP? Polo is booked in to be castrated :screams: on Friday. When we got him his breeder mentioned that ACP was not recommended for boxers as problems had arisen in the past. When I mentioned this at the vets when I booked him in I was told a half a dose would be OK but I'm debating about asking for it not to be used at all & wondered if anyone had any advice? Thanks a lot,

Linda x

Re: a.c.p.

Thanks for your support. ACP is a sedative given prior to the anaesthetic. :smash6: As I said the vet. nurse did say they give boxers a half dose along with an alternative - so I'm going to ask them to give the alternative as a full dose.
Anyway I'll let you know how we get on & how the patient does - it was so funny today - he cocked his leg for the very first time - he looked really strange - but then next wee he did went back to squatting  still a lot to learn!

In the US (and probably Canada) we call it ACE - it's acepromazine. Definitely contraindicated in Boxers. Here's a little more information on it:

Thanks for that info 'Guest' - i'm printing it out right now ready to take with me in the morning. :smash6:

Jacquie, re the humping - Polo's not doing that yet tho I know of at least 2 dogs at his training class (younger AND female) who are apparently really bad!! He's only really a problem at his training class where he'd much rather be playing with the girls than doing what I tell him :nonono: - outside the class he's usually fine.

Yes it is called ACE here too and NO I wouldn't let them use it. When Eddie was getting fixed I went to the vets armed with print outs off the computer all about ACE and boxers. The vet was great and luckily she had heard of this so there was no ACE used for Eddie.

Re: a.c.p.

When I took Polo this morning I had a word with the vet, who I know cos her dog goes to the same training classes, she said they only use a tiny amount for boxers & she's never had any problems, but she said as I wasn't happy about it they'd use an alternative.
I just phoned the vets - they said it had all gone well & he was just waking up

Re: a.c.p.

Polo was rather groggy last night but he's a lot brighter this morning - bit clingy though, he cries if no-ones with him . He's got a 'lamp shade' collar on to stop him licking himself which he's not too impressed with but he has sussed how to get to his food & water while wearing it - had to hand feed him last night - bless him.
The cats loved it though - they wandered in & out safe knowing he wasn't going to chase them :bolt:
At least the ops over & done with now - maybe one day he'll forgive us  :loveya:

Re: a.c.p.

Hi Linda
Glad the op is over with. Polo wont take long to bounce back:jump: We have so much on at the moment I have been putting Blue's "bits" off but it will get done! Donna (my step daughter is ready to have the twins anyday now) and my son Sean is going to Basra with the Army. He was 20 last week. I'm not looking forward to that I hate the news at the best of times!
Blue only humps two peoples legs, Donna's boyfriend and my friends son:rolleyes: When we tell him off he stops quickly. He has started carrying my daughters stuffed toys about with him though. He just cuddles them.
Let us know how Polo is getting on.

Re: a.c.p.

Thanks everyone for your concern :loveya: Polo went for a quick check-up today & they were really pleased with him & everything was looking fine - the fun time could be next Monday when he has his stitches out :bolt:
In himself he's fine - the main problem we have is with his 'lamp shade' collar thingy - he just barges round the house bumping into things, I'm sure we'll have no paint on the door frames by the time it comes off - & it's permanently filthy especially when he's been out in the garden :smash6: but he doesn't seem to mind too much having it on, much to our great surprise  - he probably wonders what's going on - went to sleep & woke up with a big plastic thing attached to his neck :rotflmao:
I'll let you know how we get on with the stitches :screams:

Re: a.c.p.

well i found out on thurs day that diesle has to be castrated wen hes up to size and strength, because wen we got him he was very thin because his previous owners didnt have time for him,and wen i got him to the vets it appears that only one testicle has dropped in to him scrotum meaning the other one is still somewere in his abdomen, and if we dont have this done then he will develope cancerous cells, so i was wondering if someone could please give me some information on this a.c.p thank you very much jill:ohwell:
