Hi All!
A few weeks ago we noticed that Snoop's eyes were getting very red and puffy, along with his lips and ears. We took him to the vet who confirmed he had very swollen eyes and put him on drops which seemed to have worked. She mention allergies to food as the main culprit, so we have changed his food. After his drops finished it all came back and again we talked to the vet and we could only pin his reaction to a new walk I took him on and thought that he had dug something up, so I have since gone back to our old walk. And again the redness died down for a few days! However now it is all happening again! It seems to get worse in the evenings or when we have been out for a couple of hours and he has been left home alone. His eyes weep and he gets very down, just sulking around the house. After a few hours it calms down. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? I know it sounds silly but can he be allergic to our cats (long haired) They all eat in close proximaty to each other and we often catch them snuggling up together. Thanks! Katie.

Really can't help Katie - Gixer's eyesoften get red and puffy - usually after agility which is in an equestrain centre - as you remember he is quite partial to horse pooh!!!! Are there any horse son the walk you take Snoop - could it be that? Sorry to hear he's poorly see you soon

When do you feed him? We narrowed Katie's down to after she had been fed at night. We too changed her commercial pet foods and in end gave up and now cook for her. That has helped 100%. I dont know what they are putting in dog food these days but for some dogs, it is just lethal for allergies. We were so impressed to the reaction that Katie had with cooking for her we took the other two off commercial dog good and are cooking for them too. Katie scratched her face so much she had blood pouring out of it. Pics of comparison for you to see of Katie.
Katie with her wee sore swollen face. You can see where she had been tearing at the left side of her nose looking at the pic. You can see how miserable she looks. This was on a hypoallergenic sensitive food.  4-5 days on a home cooked diet  Helen

Allergies are a nuisiance. Tizzy was tested and she showed up for crop grasses, but she still seems really sensitive to other things as well.
It is really difficult to pin things down and it isn't always down to their food, it could be environmental too. Have you tried giving him an antihistamine when his eyes are puffy?

So far, Anti-histamines are the only thing that work for Tucker. Tyson had allergies as a puppy but outgrew them after the first year and they have never been a problem since. Tucker's are more severe. Not so much with the puffy eyes but with the runny eyes, runny nose, itchiness, coughing... etc. A few days of a steriod and then a anti-histamine to help with flare ups is what we do.
How old is your boxer? The vet told me that food allergies are not really present until about age 2. That seems strange to me and I don't think I agree? |

Tizzy was only two in September 08 and she has been diagnosed since January 08.

When Harvey first got his allergies he was just over a year. I think like a lot of things they get some immunity from their mother for the first year or so and then when its left to their own immune system that is when the problems start. The vet told me that Harvey was at the age when problems arose with allergies. As a vet said to me that we used to go to years ago, even if you do find out the cause of the allergies, it can sometimes be nigh impossible to remove them completely from your environment. We never found out the cause of Harveys and he had to go on steroids last year. Thankfully this year Pirition [touch wood] has controlled any problems he has had which have been minimal so hopefully he will grow out of them.

Tizzy lost her mother at 3 days which is why they think she is suffering from allergies. I have a theory that those pups that are taken away from their mother too early are more prone to them.

Thank you all for the advice! I think I have finally norrowed it all down! After changing food, places we walk, shampoo and much more he was still having reactions. I finally twigged that he was getting all 'puffy' whenever he came in from outside or I played with him. After I mentioned this to the vet she seemed to agree with me that this was just a rection to him getting overheated. I now have to watch him when we go out that he doesnt get too exhausted.
So thankfully nothing too major just need to keep an eye on it!
