Re: Sasha's not well

Sasha's calcium levels have gone up, but that could be because the steroids haven't kicked in yet. Her bloods also show that her red blood cell count is low, which cld be a rogue result or because she is bleeding somewhere or is anemic (although her colour is good). They will check that again on Wed. She saw one of her regular vets & he was quite shocked at her deterioration, she is now down to 23kgs. He is keen to make sure we balance her quality of life and will be guiding us carefully.

Vets pretty much certain it's lymphoma, probably gastrointestinal. She would need surgery and then chemo and that would probably only give her 6 months. All of this would involve a 4 hour car journey, just to get the tests done and i am not willing to put her through that, plus the vet doesn't feel it's fair on her either.

It is now just a waiting game. We may get six months, we may have less. I will just give her all the fuss and love she needs for as long as she is with me

Re: Sasha's not well

Was tough at the vets today, but I am glad we got everything sorted. Tizzy is Sasha's shadow and doesn't really do anything without Sasha's lead - she eats when she eats, drinks when she drinks, pees . poos ...... you get the picture! If Tizzy is out of the house, Sasha enjoys the break, but Tizzy just frets until she comes home. We spoke to Jill (vet) and Natalie (vet nurse) about it today and we are going on their recommendation, which is to take Tizzy with us, but she'll wait in the car and then she can come in afterwards and sniff her, so she will hopefully understand why she's not at home. Have also chosen Sasha's urn. Hopefully we wont have to think about it again for a while, but I wanted to be prepared in case it all happened in a rush and it didn't happen the way I wanted it to. Her vets have been amazing, the whole practice is following Sasha's story and rooting for her, she couldn't get better care and love than she is!! xxx

She has had an anti sickness injection today and now has meds for it. She is getting probiotic yoghurt in every meal, hopefully that helps too. She hasn't been sick all day today, which is brilliant!

I slept with her last night, I was on the sofa, she was on the floor beside me. SO many times I thought she had taken her last breath!! Thankfully she is brighter today, so we will see what tomorrow brings with her blood tests.

Re: Sasha's not well

Ok, so over a week later, here is where we are at just now:

Sasha has gone back up to 25.6kgs, which is still less than she was on 8th September.

Her heart is as strong as it could be, but her breathing is getting harder for her. She has a low red blood cell count, which means her body isn't getting enough oxygen around it it. What this means is that she tends to get a little panty if she gets hungry, needs a wee, gets excited, wants attention etc etc. She also ends up shivering all over, again that's because her body can't cope with any extra work.

Her body is breaking down red blood cells somewhere but, at the moment, it is still continuing to make them, which is good news.

Now that we have got the calcium levels back under control (yay!) she has had her steroids reduced to 10 a day (from 18) to try and stop the damage to her other organs, as well as trying to settle her stomach which is in a mess!

We are taking her off the anti sickness tablets, again because long term use is not advised and it should be the calcium levels that made her sick. We shall see tomorrow.

She is on antibiotics still and now has paste for her tummy, as well as bran to go over her food to try and get her just a little bit solid. At the moment she is completely liquid, bless her.

Vet has said that we shouldn't just try and keep her calm and let her do what she wants, so she went on a walk today.

Ring o Roses, Sasha and Tizzy style

Stick fun and games Please excuse my email notification that comes through during the video!

it is still one day at a time. Vet says that she is doing really well, but her body is under a lot of stress just now and it may be that she will go downhill very quickly when the time comes. We are just making the most of the time we have with her really.

It is her birthday on Friday, she will be 8 years old
:cheering:

Re: Sasha's not well

Looking back on how Sasha was 2 weeks ago and I am so chuffed she is doing so well! She is back on to her JWB with tinned meat, her stomach is sorted and she hasn't been sick since she came off the tablets!! If it wasn't for her weight and breathing, you wouldn't know anything was wrong with her! The vets thought she had days, but my girl is proving them wrong and being a real fighter!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Here's a couple of wee videos of her from Saturday. We went to the beach for some fun but, as you can see, it really upset her breathing. Not to worry, she is breathing a bit better today, so that's what's important!

Fun on the beach

Re: Sasha's not well

Sasha had a huge set back on Wednesday and was sick all night, which really took it out of her. Thankfully the injection worked and she finally stopped at 7am and then slept all day Thursday.

Unfortunately she now has a lot of fluid retention (gained 2kgs in 3 days!!) She is on diuretics now to help ease it as it is making her breathing very short and difficult.

The vet thinks she is amazing and said that she has to be a boxer to be fighting this, as some breeds would just lie down and give up. Sasha still has her sparkle and like the vet says, we treasure every extra day as a bonus :love:

Re: Sasha's not well

Aww thanks for asking Helen xx

Well despite the vets thinking she wouldn't see October, it looks like she is going to make it into December and maybe even more!

She is on 6 steroids a day, 5 diuretics and antibiotics and also has an anti sickness every other day to keep her stomach settled.

She has some horrible thickening of the skin on the back of her neck which looks horrible and sore, but it doesn't seem to bother her.

Her breathing is very rattly and she always sounds like she has something stuck in her throat, but it doesn't seem to bother her. I massage her throat every now and then, but it doesn't always help.

Sasha is still happy in herself and, despite feeling old and tired, she does still enjoy her walks and LOVES her food! Although that could be the steroids talking

The vets say that she is now developing Cushings Disease because of the overuse of steroids, but there is nothing we can do about that really. Some days she looks tired and fed up and I wonder if it's time, but then other days she is happy and trying to climb up on the sofa.

As you will see from this video, her breathing gets really hard for her, especially if she gets too warm or even when she is hungry or needs a wee. Basically, anything that puts extra stress on her body, makes her pant and breath heavy, but again, it doesn't seem to bother her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQnDDmAaSkw

Here are a couple of photos from her last walk, as you can see, she still has a smile on her face!:love::love:

Re: Sasha's not well

Sasha's time is upon us. We are hoping to get her through Christmas and maybe get into 2012.

We don't quite know what to think or how to feel, or even when we are going to do it, we just know we are going to have to face it soon.

She has done wonderfully in the last 7 months and we have known this time is coming.

Vet has said that he thinks Sasha is ready now and not to leave it too long :crying:
