Hi Everyone
Got into an argument about this today with a dog breeder! What age do you think/ do you get companion bitches should be speyed at? These are dogs that will not be bred from or shown. I look at it from someone who had worked with rescue and know what I feel but the argument got so heated I began to wonder just how everyone else feels about it. K

I am no professional when it comes to this kind of thing, but I was advised to get Sasha speyed AFTER her first season and not before.
Apparently, for their hormones sake, you need to let them have one season but that's all. My last girl was speyed after we got her at four and she had incontinence problems constantly after that. Touch wood no probs with Sasha so far. My Mum had to get her lab speyed before her first season as she had several phantom pregnancies - she seemed to have no problems afterwards. Personally I feel that if you aren't going to show them or breed them, that it is better for all concerned that it is done as early as possible. The dogs behaviour is unpredictable during season and that can cause problems around the house, as well as the fact it make them so darn miserable! Any help??!! Karen  |

I have mostly had dogs. I was told by a vet when my son had Tara (the staffy) to let her have one season then have her "done".
I think the goverment should make some kind of law that if you are not a breeder or showing the dog, it must be spayed or castraited by 18 months old. That would soon get rid of "accidents" by people who "never intended to breed". What do you think?

I agree with that Jacquie.
I also think that insurance companies should be a bit more responsible and pay out towards the costs of these operations, rather than saying it's an elective surgery. The operations certainly aren't cheap and I can see why a lot of people just say they cant afford it - luckily we had some money put by ready. Perhaps vets could be a bit more helpful and reduce the costs too, but in a profit orientated world the biggest losers are the ones that suffer the most! Karen |

Lets face it £150 is alot of money, If vets were cheeper then more people would have it done as a matter of course.. Vets can charge whatever they like. There are no gidelines in place. I know when I first got Blue, and I was phoneing around for the price of inoculations. It depended on where the vet was located what price they charged! There was a diffrence of £10. Lets face it, it's better for your animals health to have them castrated or spayed. I haven't had Blue done yet as when I do have the money put away one of the kids need something or we get an unexpected bill! Not to worry, he will get done soon.

The vet advised us to wait until Heskey can cock his leg without falling over!!! He needs to have the op cos hes only got one testicle thats decended, but regardless, i think it stops problems when he gets older ( you know men and their dangly bits)

You are lucky there Liz, if Heskey only has one testicle descended then he "needs" the op and the insurance will pay out!!

Well I have always had our girls done before their first season and so far [touch wood] no problems. Katie is going at the end of April. Absolutely dread the thoughts of it. I am taking a week off work. I would be like a senseless idiot the day she is having it done anyway. In our rescue we have always advocated that the dogs were done before the first season as advised by the vet. Male dogs - around 12-14 months. Maybe we have just been lucky. Towards the end of her life [10 or 11] my first Boxer began to have a little incontinence but that could have been age related. This particular lady I was talking to said that the dog would never mature. We havent had that problem either although some would argue that Boxers never mature anyway! Hey, who wants a dog that is sedate all its life when you can have a Boxer!! K |

I think the advice from vets varys dependant on age / lenght of time in career / training.
A friend of ours is a vet and they recommended speying before first season especially in boxers as it reduces the chances of cancer in later life and also reduces the chances of complications. Whereas our vet who trained many years ago dismissed this as incorrect and that as already mentioned t was important the dog was allowed to fully develop and have the correct hormone balance. He did however also say that it was preferable to have them speyed before they were 18 months old. Personally we followed our own vets advice and both seem fine but it's a tough call especially if your vet was trained in the last 7-8years as perceptions regarding neutering / speying seem to have changed a lot. I suppose ultimately we are all entitled to our own opinion and you can only follow the advice of a well known reputable vet / vets practice, unfortunately how ever as we all know not all vets are as good as others as in any walk of life standards , knowledge, expertise and experience vary imensely from practice to practice. Here (Ontario) the usual rule that vets say is to get your female fixed at 6 months old. They prefer to have her done before they ever go into heat. They actually charge a higher fee for the procedure if the dog has had her first heat before you get her done.
Males are the same, 6 months is the preferred age. They will actually do it around 5 months if "they" have "dropped" |

A sudden thought occured to me the other day (they dont happen to often so I like to write them down!!)
As I mentioned before, my last girl Katie got speyed at 4 and then had incontinence problems for the rest of her life. Thinking about it, that may not have been her age, but that she had had a litter of pups when she was fairly young. She escaped on her previous owners when in season and had a "mixed" litter. That was a VERY good reason for me getting her done!! The only difference in thought here seems to be the "before or after" scenario with bitches? I have never had a dog so don't know anything about that apart from the fact it calms them down a bit?? Karen |

Dont believe it, having a male dog neutered is no guarantee that they will calm down. If they are done before 12 months it is said to work but leave it until after 12 months and ........... If anyone is having problems dog or bitch aggression, hyper etc try evening primrose oil. Start off 500mg per day for a week, 1000mg per day for a week and then 1500mg a day for 10 weeks. At the end of the 3 month period you can try cutting back on it gradually. Some dogs can do just as well on 500mg per day and it "controls" their problem or helps it. However it is not a cure and only helps so long as it is given. It iwill never hurt them and the most noticeable thing will be a nice glossy coat! People usually look at me when I tell them about it as if I am mad especially with a male dog :roundnround: but it is an excellent component that helps all round. Whatever is wrong or missing in the body it corrects or helps to. My brother has a little Staffie x and he is really hyper. that dog can bounce off the walls and does. First time I saw him do it I was stunned. He is spoilt which does not help. They didnt believe it about EPO [Eve Primrose oil] until I gave them some. Then they got bored and stopped it and within a week the dog was back to bouncing off the walls. He is still hyper even when on it but it helps. Hey - I should get a share in EPO sales shouldn't I? I give it to Rosie plus honey and royal jelly. She used to be intolerant of it but can take it now. I built it up by pricking a hole in the capsule and dripping drops onto her food and worked her up onto 1000mg a day very gradually. I give it to her for her skin. Did any of you know that royal jelly is good for arthritis? I didnt until a few months ago when I was buying it in the health store - got talking to the sales staff and she told me that that was what it was mainly used for. K |

Sasha has Evening Primrose for her "bald" patches, which are gradually clearing up!
Sasha was extremely hyper when we got her - more than just boxer behaviour though, she was completely wound up and just didnt know what to do with herself. The dog trainer that came to see us, told me to change her diet as she had too much protein - apparently protein to dogs is like E numbers to a 5 year old! Worked a treat on her and she has been normal ever since, what ever that is in a boxer!! Sounds like evening primrose is a cure for all - Sasha is actually sharing my stock from Nature's Best!! hi everyone,as you know i'm new to this site,but after reading your messages about what age to spay i felt i had to tell you what i have been told.
my vet,who is a very good vet recomends that bitches get done at 6-8 months,before her first season.doing it at this time totally rules out the chances of mamary tumours.after having to put one of my dachshunds through a mamary strip op,i always get my girls done early.never had a problem since. trish |

I do agree with what has been said above. The only thing is I have an entire male. My reason for that is purley selfish, if it isnt broken then dont fix it.
He has never humped anything or been agressive. Exept a friends son:shocked:. Females I feel are slightly diffrent. If I were to have the coice ans had a female I would probably have her spayed at about 8 mths. If the wee girl has had a litter then It could be diffrent, done atg 6 mths I think is too early and can lead to bladder problems. Only going by experiance, Im not a vet

Bonnie is not speyed.....the vet sees no need as soon as he says it needs to be done she will be speyed..
Like Jacqui said if it is'nt broke...... Bonnie did get pregnant by accident & we did not intend to breed but we dealt with it responsibly . I understand this angers some people but please understand genuine accidents do happen |
