HI and welcome. Look forward to chatting and hearing more about your boy.
Has your vet did thyroid tests? He needs to do the following T4, T3 and TSH. They are the only ones that are reliable and must be done together. Hair loss is common with thyroid problems and yes, the skin can turn black. I urge you to go back to your vet and get him to do the above thyroid tests. In the first instance, help is at hand though. Hilton herbs produce a product called "Phytobalm". Massaged daily into the bald areas - you dont need very much, the hair will grow back, even the black skin will grow hair. It will take longer and can take upwards of 12 weeks. However this is only treating the symptoms so you do need to find out once and for all if your dog has thyroid problems. http://www.hiltonherbs.com/canine/canine_coatandskin.cfm?cfid=24230585&cftoken=99655362 I know from experience!
