NEW owner with a question?

Firstly hello all it is nice to be part of your community at last! (The Boxer owners that is...)

Christmas eve a little lad came to live with me following his owners inability to home him anymore. His name is Cooper (apt as Henry Cooper was a white Boxer too!!) and he is 6 months old.

He really is a little gem, on the whole VERY well behaved for a puppy let alone a boxer puppy! HE walks well, trotting alongside me without pulling and apart from sleeping all the time he is a joy to have around.
I just couldnt bear to see him pushed from pillar to post any longer as I am now the third owner in as many weeks!

My question (maybe obvious and silly but have to ask) is he classed as a "White Boxer" as he had distinctive brown markings on his face but a white body completely? Other than the traditional colours I have only ever seen pure white boxers all over or ones with VERY little dark markings on them.

Cheers all
Pauly

Welcome Pauly and Cooper! Hope you enjoy the forum!

In answer to your question, yes Cooper is classed as a white boxer. His main colour is predominantly white.

What a shame that he has had so many homes in such a short space of time. Good on you for taking him on!

I am with More Than and have had no problems claiming. Their limits are PER CONDITION and not per year, so it works out better for ongoing things like allergies etc.

Can I be cheeky and ask you to go through this link if you are looking for quotes Boxer Welfare Scotland Fundraising Linksl

If you get quote from those links and then take out a policy, we get a few pennies

All helps the rescue cause!!

Re: NEW owner with a question?

No worries consider it done!

He certainly is a handsome little lad. Taking him to the vets tonight for a once over to check he's all ok bless him.

Started feeding him on James Wellbeloved (dry) for puppies as my friend who's a dog behaviourist raves over that and Burns for healthy dogs and that one seems to be particularly good for Boxers tums. Should have no problems with it as he is already used to dry food, followed by refilling his tank with water! ha ha

Hi

Bella`s insured with Petplan, this last year i`ve had three large claims and they`ve paid up with no problem (thank god or we`d probably be living in a shed by now). They`re not the cheapest but very reliable and pay the vets direct.
Hope this helps.

Hi
Really gorgeous boy there. I have just re-insured Katie with Sainsbury's, they were the cheapest I could find and came highly recommended by my next door neighbour. I was with another company and still am for Rosie and Harvey but they put their prices up too much this year so cut my losses and went elsewhere.

So glad you took Cooper on and he can be in his forever home.

Re: NEW owner with a question?

Well its 7 months on now and our lil lad is getting bigger! He's developed SUCH a funny character and we love him to bits. Although a bit mischievous he is a very good dog and very well behaved and obedient.

Just one problem... seems completely untrainable at recall once off the lead outside. He'll go off after any other animal and wont come back! Not able to let him off the lead really unless in the garden which is a shame as he's SO well behaved and obedient in other arenas.

Anyway here's some updated pics..

Re: NEW owner with a question?

Hi Pauly and Cooper - can I just say what a handsome young chap he is. My boy GIxer can turn a deaf ear when out runnong and everywhere else is fine. Not sure yet if it's because he's a Boxer or male!!! (sorry!!!!!)
I foung that calling him then if he didn't come walk in the opp. direction without talking then everytime he charged past I walk back again then stop and wait for him to come to me then lots of praise when he finally came worked. (also got me a few strange looks)It was hard and could take a bit of time but he soon caught on. Failing that having a pot of favourite treats to rattle can work or suddenly kneeling down and finding something really interesting with lots of "ooohs" . Most of this has to be done with a really excited voice as you have to be more wexciting and interesting than whatever he is currently doing. As a last resort I found falling on the ground a good one to get him back!!!!! (YOu will have to ead one of my posts about agility to find out the whole story!!!)
Anyway hope I've made a bit of sense and helped.

Good Luck

Georgie & Gixer

Re: NEW owner with a question?

Oh hes not unusual in that respect, lots and lots of young dogs dont want to come back when let off the lead and Boxers are "top of the class" at turning deaf ears.

You need to go back to basics. Doing recalls in the house and garden for tasty treats, high value treats such as liver cubes or cheese cubes - dont give at any other time other than his training sessions. Get him to do his "sits", "downs", "paw" etc and give the treat with lots of praise. What you are trying to do is build up the idea in his head that "YOU" are much more interesting than whatever is taking his interest outside.

Have you tried attaching a long line to his collar? You can get some really long training leads in the likes of PetsatHome - They range from 10 metres or so. If PAH dont have them you would get one on the internet. There is one on ebay at the minute - they call it - 10 METRES / 30 FOOT LONG CLIX TRAINING LINE INC. UK P&P
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Clix-Long-Line-Training-Lead-10-metres_W0QQitemZ400059719554QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs?hash=item5d256adf82&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1683%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Just make sure it is suitable for a dog as strong as a Boxer - email the seller. I got a extending lead off a ebay seller and the only type of dog it was suitable for would have been a chihuahua.

They give them a long run out but you still have a lot of control. Be careful though as if the dog is running full pelt and comes to the end of the line - you can be jerked forwards very unexpectedly and sharply. Happened to me with our youngest when he was about 7 months and how I stayed upright I will never know:rofl: They are good though. As when the dog runs out, you can "call" them back and if they ignore you, you can "pull" gently to coax them back and once back, "praise and reward".

He is really gorgeous - love his facial markings.

Helen

Re: NEW owner with a question?

hey am new here but just saw this post, regarding getting a long line for a dog, i'd recommend using a lunge line for a horse. they're usually about 10m long and if they're strong enough for a horse then i'm sure they'll cope with a dog lol! robinsons is a really cheap mail order catalogue that i use for my horses.

good luck with the recall, and your Cooper is just GORGEOUS!!
