Hi Elaine & welcome - maybe I should have read this post first, lol.
Good luck with the training - I'm sure Xena will be a great help & Zeus will copy her a lot. We have always used hand signals as well as voice with Polo even though his hearing is fine, I suppose the signals just reinforce the voice commands. In fact he sometimes responds better to visual signs - if we beckon him he'll come running, not always the case if we simply call him - dirty looks work too if he's done something wrong ![]() Let us know how you get on. Hi there. Good luck with your Zeus. My last boxer went deaf with old age and I found her very hard to deal with, so I can imagine what you are going through! I am sure Zeus age will make a huge difference, Katie was petrified everytime we went out and wouldnt leave our side, but then I suppose that was because she wasnt used to it. Being able to train him from a young age is a wonderful advantage for him and I am sure he is just going to have the best of lives with his family!

Hi Elaine,
As the proud owner of 2 boxers - Tasha (white & deaf) and Molly (light red brindle), I can honestly say from experience that training a deaf dog is hard work but well worth the effort. Whilst Molly was our first boxer and will always be very special, Tash is as special but in a different way. Tash is very independant and does not rely on company as heavily as Molly who is a big softy. Anyway some pointers - you may find that Zeus will not be keen on people stroking him on the head especially as he cannot gauge them by their voice whether or not they love him to bits. I would imagine that Xena - even at 6 1/2 months will be a massive help to you - for instance we trained Molly to retrieve Tash when we are out on walks. Quite simply we started off in the back garden asking Molly to fetch Tash when Tash was facing away from us, each time she got Tash's attention and brought her back too us we would reward them both with a treat. All Molly does is either run around Tash (we reffer to it as a fly by) and then back to us or gently nuzzle her if required, I thought I would add that bit just incase you had visions of a 4 stone boxer running along with a 5 stone boxer in it's mouth. Believe me Mollys stupid but not that dull. When Molly gets Tash's attention we use our own hand signals for her to return to us as well just too re-inforce the command and it works 95% of the time. You could say that Molly is Tash's ears - Tash watches Mollys body language like a hawk and is able to determine many things through Molly. We did not use the approved sign language book to sign but did use it to increase our understanding of the best ways of training a deaf dog. So whilst we have our own signs Tash will sit, stay, lie down, fetch, re-call, heal etc etc pretty much what most dogs can / should do with the correct and proper training. On the odd occasions that Molly fails to get Tash to follow her back to us it is simply a matter of waiting until you are in her field of view and then using eiter a standard command for to return or getting her to stay where she is and finding out what is so interesting that she would not follow her sister. I have loads more suggestions regarding training etc so please fell free to get in touch at the following [WHISPER=elaine31uk][/Elaine please feel free to contact at my e-mail listed here as I am sure there are loads of things you would like to know and I am more than happy to help. My e-mail is - paul.mcrae@parkgroup.co.ukWHISPER] I could go on for ages but I don't want to bore every body too much. It would be great to hear from you and in the mean time good luck and happy training. Paul ![]() |
