I blame you Nicki!!!!

Nicki - We have two new pets and it is all your fault (only joking)!!

We have two baby rats!!

Since you told us all about your rats and my husband read your post he has been on and on about getting rats, we have had them since last Sunday but like you I am actually starting to see how clever and sweet they can be -although i do panic if they climb onto my shoulder. and i cant see what they are doing.

A couple of nights ago my husband gave me one to hold and it climbed onto my shoulder and was making a funny grinding noise with its teeth - I panicked thinking that it was going to bite me but apparently they do that as a sign of affection???

I am slowly getting used to them, I am glad that we got babies instead of adult ones as the adults were enormous!!

This way i can get used to them before they get too big.

My sister is not too happy now though as my niece has been asking for one for a while (I didn't know) and now wants one even more now that we have them.

When we went to the pet shop to buy them there were some gorgeous boxer puppies in there - I tried to convince him to buy one of them instead and he told me that if I could find the difference between 10 for two rats and 799 for a boxer puppy then i could have one!!!

I can't believe the price that some pet shops charge for boxer puppies and how they get away with it - obviously some people are paying those sort of prices to keep them in business.

So at the last count we have three boxers, two rats, a parrot and a corn snake - oh and me and Brendan!!!

We really need to win the lottery to buy a bigger house to keep them all in!!

I didnt know you could buy pups [except for Harrods] in pet stores on the mainland? 800 is a lot of money for a pup. Here the most you would pay for a Boxer is 450 and that is expensive. Average is between 250 - 350. Depending on the breeding. What way do they keep the puppies in the petstores?

You're mad Caroline - stark raving bonkers!!

On the pet shop side of thing, I had it in my head that you couldn't buy anything bigger than a rabbit from most of them these days because of the health implications of keeping them in small cages in the shop etc??

As far as i know any pet shop is allowed to sell pups - it just depends on whether they have the space. However they don't necessarily give them much space.

The place we go to is a large pet warehouse place - they have an enormous section for food, toys, beds and everything else you may need ( almost the size of a large supermarket) then off to the side is a reptile shop and a seperate pet shop which sells all the animals.

They keep the pups in glass fronted cages with wire mesh tops to prevent anyone stroking them (in case of infection)of various sizes depending on how many are kept in each - I think the smallest is probably about 5ft x 5ft and the biggest 8ft x 5ft. They are kept in this area and they have larger cages out the back (like what kennels use) to house them when the shop is not open.

I don't agree with this as i think young puppies are better off with a family to help their socialisation. I don't think they sell the puppies until they are twelve weeks old - after they have had all their injections and are able to go out.

And i cant believe the price they charge for them - although people are obviously paying it to keep them in business.

The average for a boxer puppy in London is between 450 and 550 - occasionally you see them for sale with champion mothers & fathers and they may sell for up to 650.

Also there is the fact that anyone can wake up one morning and decide they want a puppy and just go there and buy one - whereas most breeders would question the suitability of the owners and ensure that they know all the characteristics of the dog. I think the ones that are bought from pet shops are more likely to need rehoming after a while than those bought from reputable breeders as they are sometimes bought on the spur of the moment with no proper thought going into it.

There is also a pet shop in Walthamstow high street that sells puppies. They have been broken into twice over the last eighteen months and all their puppies stolen. There were rumours going round that they were stolen by people who didn't agree with the conditions that they were being kept in. The puppies were never found ( I just hope that they were cared for properly and went to good homes in the end). The shop had an article in the local paper stating that they would be stopping selling puppies because of this - however when i went to past the shop a couple of weeks ago there was a sign in the window advertising what pups they had 'in stock'. Their prices also used to be really high (700 for a boxer puppy). I think they must have lost a lot of their profit when they stopped selling them and so have now started again.

Most smaller pet shops don't sell puppies as they don't have the space to keep them.
