Looking to build a waterboxer in my bug

Hi,

I drive a 1967 VW bug 1500.

I have read several websites from people like steve who did the job. And I am thinking about doing it myself too, although I have no experience with engines etc.

I am looking at a 2.1l DJ 112bhp right now, it's up for sale 300 euro, is this reasonable?

Furthermore, what is there to be done? Bolt in the engine, using a Type 4 flywheel. Putting all the cables in place. Placing a radiator in the front of the bug. And what and how many pipes run down to the back then?

What else should I know or is there to be done?

Please lemme know! Cheers!

I don't know what engines go for over there, just shop around and you will get an idea of what is reasonable.

You will need 2 coolant lines running to the front of your car, one "hot" line and the "cold" return line. I used 1.5 inch copper tubing and soldered up all the bends and connections.

As I understand, you will need that type 4 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.

Re: Looking to build a waterboxer in my bug

Not hijacking your thread or anything but I'm looking for the same info as you.
I'm a tech working for VW and used to work on old VW's. I remember bolting a beetle bellhousing to a DG/DJ engine but didn't know about the type4 flywheel bit. Would that be the 2.0 AirCooled flywheel? If so, is it type4 specific?
This is the only bit I need to know, mating the engine to beetle box and the flywheel/clutch type! The pipework can be fabricated. Any help would be appreciated as my bug shell's going for blasting/painting soon and I'd like to get the engine side underway but need to be sure I can get hold of the parts to do it.

Cheers.

BTW: 300 Euros!!! Sounds good to me. I'm paying £1300 for a remtec DJ unit.

I have just completed my 1.9 wbx into a 72 bug.
Have a look on this forum for more details.

The engine is the easy part, the cooling system is the real challenge

Had some oil pressure problems resulting from a blocked oil pickup. Just completed a full rebuild and have got it running.
Before, it was fantastic to drive, loads of torque, great engine purrr and a roar when the carbs opened up.
Be glad to get it run in, again :peace:
