Re: Finally fitting my EG33 in our 77 Baja Bus ( Now with Pics)
Vanaru 33,
I am another Syncro Owner (88 model) with an existing ER27 6cyl subaru motor which was running fantastic up until mid last year when the timing belt snapped. (my stupidity).
The belts were replaced and the car went really well for 6 months until a lifter noise developed early this year. My mechanic has had them out and had the car quiet for half a day and the noise returned. I have tried, new oil pump seals and factory oil filter (with releif valve) and the noise remains.
Hence, before the engine totally dies I am researching the EG33 installation.
I have already had to rebuild my expensive gearbox $6K just for that and that is with much less power than the EG33. How did your gearbox cope so far?
I also have a couple of other questions if you dont mind:
Did your EG33 installation reduce your clearances at all? If so -by how much.
How did you mount the engine in relation to the existing crade? My ER27 conversion uses the VW cradle with the subaru mounts welded on it and the cross bar re-shaped to suit. The frame is standard height yet my sump sits lower by probably 30mm and has been hit a few times off-roading.
How hard was the wiring conversion with the Subaru ECU?
Did you do your own high clearance sump work?
Any other tips to the conversion you might be able to provide?
I appreciate any help you can give.
I am located on the NSW Central Coast and hence it is not a short drive in a sick car to get to you. Any photos would be a great help.
Thanking you in advance.
Regards,
Scott.

Hi Scott , I have tried several times to also get in contact with Vanaroo to no success. From what i know of his conversion i would not copy his sump as this has been the cause of death of his motor . When and if you are ready to fit an EG33 give me a call @ Custom Vee Dub in Brisbane 07-33564356 and we will be more than happy to give you a quote on a similar sump to mine in the bay. As for the wiring loom we can also arrange for this to be modified for you so it will become a basicully plug and go system. Your gearbox , well that my freind is totally up to how you drive it as to how it will last , if you drive it hard and give the box big shock loads it's gunna break whether you 've got an EG33 or a stock 2.1 lt. Crossmember , I should imagine your current crossmember is at the rear of the ER27 with long brackets going foward to pic up the verticle boltholes either side of the sump. The EG33 mounts are un fortunatley on the flywhell end of the motor and you will more than likely need to build a complete new crossmember , mabey similar to mine , but dont fore get to weld crush tubes through the chassis rails. Any other questions give me a ring .
Andrew
PS are you comming to Valla for the VW spectacular in late July [1 edits; Last edit by Oz_Towdster at 21:19:52 Fri May 2 2008]

Re: Finally fitting my EG33 in our 77 Baja Bus ( Now with Pics)
Dear Oz_Towdster,
Thanks for all that info. I managed to find a guy in the states who converted his syncro dual cab ute to an EG33 and he had a great diary. He ran into a few hassles with the actual motor and many little plastic bits that had hardened and become inoperable over the years of its life.
He also had problems with emmissions control in California and had to use the stock exhaust (completely) - ridiculous.
He used the Small Car conversion kit which included an instruction sheet for the wiring loom which he said took him at least 40 hours to complete.
He also used their exhaust manifold which looks pretty good apart from the fact that the syncro skid plate could not be used in conjunction. This protects both the engine and gearbox from rock damage and works well.
He also used their oil pan shortened sump kit - which he was not very impressed with.
Mine has a lot of the water connections already changed and would be fairly easy to adapt to another engine.
He suggested his mileage was not very good - 16MPG - probably as he has a syncro which is really only a four speed.
He also said his motor has a habit of stalling after long downhill decents - which is aparently caused by the ECU not liking the lack of vacuum created by the manual gearbox - these motors only came with autos in the SVX. Aparently Small Car have an ECU upgrade chip that fixes this and other minor issues.
Finding a good front cut is the next issue - where is the best place to look?
The other thing I am concerned about is how far back the motor now sits on the chassis - significantly reducing the departure angle and ready to get belted by rocks.
There is an article in VMA about an SVX conversion into an auto 2wd caravelle and he loves it and has had no problems. He also said he drove an auto 2.2 single cam and said it was no more powerful than the Waterleaker WBX he had before.
Anyway, my engine the 2.7 Suby 6cyl is still going well - loads of power but a little noisy at idle and hence I am planning to do the conversion slowly over say the next 12 months slowly gathering bits as I go.
My family and I will definately be at Valla and are booked into a cabin already. Catch you there and thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Scott

Re: Finally fitting my EG33 in our 77 Baja Bus ( Now with Pics)
Hi everybody , Well yesterday we had a dyno day here in Brisbane Australia , orginised by a few VW boys with approx 29 cars competeing for different types of motors etc. So of we went with our EG 33 powered baja bus to see if we could improve a little on last years run of a huge 52.4 rear wheel hp from the stock 2lt flat four. Well it ran an impresive 168.8 rear wheel horsepower from the EG 33 which when calculated with a 30% loss for steep CV angles, my 33" tyres , and your normal losses through a 091 box etc etc it calculates to 240 flywheel horsepower which is apparently pretty close to right i believe . You'll be all happy to know as i am that i alsobought home the 1st place trophy for best hp for a non VW powered Volkswagen with the next closest being a 2.5 lt V6 KLZE Baja Beetle with a 140hp Anyway i am pretty busy at the moment with the body work on the rest of the bus ( It didn't look real pretty yesterday with glass removed etc , but hey the power certainly made up for the looks) and should be finished soon i hope for some genuine more road miles .
Talk soon Andrew

Re: Finally fitting my EG33 in our 77 Baja Bus ( NOW DYNO'D )
Wow what a year....travel, family, car thieves, boat vandalism theft, computer failure, surgery, flu blah de blah blah.....I must have built up some bad karma or something....anyhoo Im back after long searches for parts for the not so wonderful EG33 I have given up on the search....Just when I gave up I came across a gentleman in Miami, Florida State side who specializes in the EG33 has rebuilt many and has systematically found faults and offers many of the parts needed for the rebuild, though the parts alone are a fortune to have shipped here and then for the builder to do his work does not work out to be light on the pocketbook. So Im biting the bullet and am ordering a complete rebuild by Michael Emery at ECUTUNE. So far I have been very impressed with communication, knowledge, help and insight. And as far as transport here it cost roughly 300-400 including all external electrical and mechanical parts...minus alt and power steering pump. I picked up my engine from CnJ today in pieces and all bolts in one box...a bit of a mess and $440 later they are in my garage...I will tinker with them..not sure what to do...will wait until I get the other engine and compare vacuume lines and timming covers to mix and match for the best outcome...though the ones on this engine seem pretty good.
Apologies for lack on connection Scottkombi and others but as for the eg33 in the syncro the clearance is not affected at all; though between lowered oil pressure(no oil pressure gauge changing once complete) and detonation my engine failed so I will be looking into a new set up.
As for the conversion I purchased it this way nearly 2 years ago but I am learning as I go as I have pulled the engine tranny and electrics since the engine went south.
Your ER27 conversion sounds similar to mine as it utilizes the VW cradle as well as the subaru mounts welded to it.
I was lucky enough to have the electrical work done for me by the previous owner who was a marine electrician though I must say I think a pretty sloppy job.
Transmission wise Im not a conservative driver though I am smart when I do get on it...It has handled WOT many of times though if I did give a sporty car a surprise of their life I would be easy from the start and shifts...still able to pull most things off!!! The power was amazing and as for fuel consumption in a trip with a FJ-73 and mitsu pajero I by far gave the most thrashing and largest load on and around rainbow beach coast and went through less fuel. I would get roughly (going back some time now) 450 550 km per tank city/highway could never be conservative with all that excitement of the joy juice.
With all the driving before the engine failure I changed tranny fluid and noticed a chimmer to the oil. I called the previous owner who did the conversion and asked the last time oil was changed and he said when he first bought it...he owned it for 3 years I believe.
I have a boat project at the moment that I am spreading myself thin but it will be finished soonish, preparing it for a trip up to the cape, with a few mates...Anyhoo I will get the camera fired up next time I am in the garage...Hope stress is low and projects are progressing until next time

Re: Finally fitting my EG33 in our 77 Baja Bus ( NOW DYNO'D )
Jeff,
I was looking for you at Valla this year and saw a few fine examples of very lifted and modified bay window dual cab utes - evev Wally in his red dual cab with a 4.4L Toyota V8 - wow what squeeze that was.
No sign of your bus so I gave up looking and I think I now know why - your engine imploded.
I have been looking at the massive issues I face with a change over of engine again and find it more logical to stick with my existing 2.7L 6cyl as it has got such great power and torque anyway. It would be crazy to waste such a great piece of machinery and it fits so well in the back of the syncro.
Good luck with yours and when I am up your way next I will drop by and say hello.
Cheers,
Scott

Hello, I have purchased the EG33 for my conversion. I have the stock ECU and wiring. Do you have the diagram so I can separate the wires properly. Looking to eliminate the extra wires and clean it up a bit. Or do you know if the SVX manual will have the diagram so I can get her started soon. Currently I am waiting on the adapter plate from Kennedy racing to mount to my 901 tyranny. Any help would be appreciated. thanks,
