EJ-20 engine swap

Hey all,

I was wondering what I would need to do in terms of fabrications to swap an EJ-20 from a Subaru into a Beetle...

Also what Beetle would be the most suitable for this swap, I currently own a 1968 vw Beetle and thought it would be better to have a more recent one?? or a super beetle.. if this is not the case then I will keep the '68

Once again, Thanks for any help

Jason

Re: EJ-20 engine swap

what do you want to do with the car? Do you want the thing to handle, or for drag racing.

a 69 and later car will handle better (IRS suspension)
a 68 and earlier car will be more suitable for drag racing (swingaxle suspension).
a superbeetle will handle better than a standard (MacPherson strut front suspension), but are heavier than a standard so not as good for drag.

you would need to trim out the sides of your engine bay to get the engine to fit in there, and fab up some engine mounts to the engine doesn't flop around back there. You will also need to put a radiator in the FRONT of your car to keep it cool.

At the moment it's more of a on road car. I was thinking about the super beetle because of the room but i havn't see many around for sale. So i'll probily go for the 68 beetle and earlier.

With relation to the engine, i was wandering how to mount it down, if there were any mounts avaliable or would i have to alter one, if so any idea how.

You need an adaptor plate and a modified flywheel to allow the Subaru motor to bolt to the VW transaxle.
On the Beetle it is the transaxle that has mounts at the back that attach to the chassis frame 'horns' and also up front at the nose cone. On the Subaru, the engine has the mounts.
There is another thread discussing whether
a. the frame horns need bracing (yes)
b. the adaptor plate is sufficient to support the engine itself or whether a cross-member should be added specifically to support the motor (maybe).

I have a '68 chassis and it has IRS. We're currently installing a Subaru EJ20 n/a jap import motor.
