Subaru motor into a Type 3 squareback

I live in Washington and i keep seeing this really cool type 3 square back running around that is light blue and white, it has a rack on top, bumpers look pretty decent, body looks pretty strait, it has a little rust and the interior looks good, it is lowered with white walls and stock VW cookie cutter wheels. Anyway, i am going to make the guy an offer, how much would a fair price be? but first i want you guys to point me in the right direction about the motor. I know for sure i want to put a subaru motor in it and i don't need a whole lot of power and i don't want a 5-speed. I have put a turbo rotary in my "73 datsun 510, so i am not new to motor swaps. I want to do a very reliable subaru motor for the least amount of money, and i also need to know what transmissions your guys would go with. When i get the type 3 i will but air bag suspension under it probably completly get rid of the rust, re-paint it the same colors, shine and polish all of the chrome and do a small restore on the car, with a little bit of a twist. thank you ever so much for the help.:jump:

I don't know what a good price is.

I've got a EJ22 in the back of my bug. It's pretty quick. I use the stock transmission, but I know if I beat on it, it'll blow chunks. If you are just tooling around, you will be fine. The EJ22 is a good all around engine, easy to mount, sort of difficult to wire up, very reliable. Some 2.5's have head gasket problems.
I don't recommend the older EA82's, they have resonable power, but they are too freakin' wide, and have 2 timing belts. The Kennedy adapter has no provision for timing marks, so changing belts on this engine is hellacious if you get mixed up.
The even older EA81 is a reliable pushrod engine, easy to wire and hook up and everything, and you can get 110-120 horse pretty easy.

most people i have talked to would recommend a later model engine like camshaftprelube said, but if you can get your hands on an ea81 like i have, they ar e a nice, small, lightweight and easy to install engine that should be very nice behind a T3.
